Field trip to the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard
September 13th at 8 am
We will meet in the Milford Shaw's parking lot and then drive to Portsmouth, NH
Speaker: Gary Hildreth
To join us, please contact Richard D'Amato at:
603.673.2156 or rdamato@myfairpoint.net

Your visit to the Shipyard will consist of a Shipyard history brief, a windshield tour, lunch at the historic Tirante Tavern, and a visit to the Shipyard Museum. You'll enjoy Gary’s take on the "Yard's" history . . . and some stories you won't find in textbooks!

After 28 years as a submariner in the Navy, Gary Hildreth began a second career in public affairs at Portsmouth Naval Shipyard. Now among other responsibilities, he conducts presentations on the Shipyard’s prominent and noble history.

A native of upstate New York, Gary attended high school in central Florida and graduated in 1975. Upon graduation, he joined the Navy and was initially stationed at
Portsmouth Naval Shipyard.

During his naval career he served aboard five different submarines spending approximately 70 days at a time submerged on 14 different occasions. After spending the majority of his naval career in the Pacific Fleet, he happily finished where he started - the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard.

Gary earned a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Business Management with a minor in Asian Studies from the University of Maryland and a Master's in American New England Studies at the University of Southern Maine.

Retiring from the Navy in 2004, he currently works in Portsmouth Naval Shipyard's Public Affairs Office and has the privilege of sharing the shipyard's history through guided tours and community outreach opportunities.

Speaker: Glenn Knoblock

Glenn Knoblock will explore the fascinating history of beer and ale brewing from the time of home and tavern brewing to the current brewing in modern breweries and brew pubs. There will be unusual and rare photos and advertising  documents of this changing industry and of the state's earliest brewers. A number of lesser known breweries and brewers will be discussed as well as the only brewery operated by a woman before the modern era.
